Did Ya Learn Something

1 05 2009

I hate to tell ya ladies that there is no way you will live on this earth and not go through something! We will all make mistakes, get hurt, have sorrow, go through pain – basically we will have hard times. The goal in life is not to get away from hard times but to learn something from them. So we can either stay stuck in the hurt, sorrow or in making the same mistakes over and over or we can learn something from it. Yes ladies, what we CAN do with the pain and or mistakes of the past after we have gone through it, is to actually take the time to learn the lessons it teaches us so that we can move on from it and not have to stay stuck in this place.

If we open our eyes to what life lessons teach us, we can become much wiser about people, places, things and choices and how all these variables work together. In all actuality it is the choices the person made that eventually hurt you, or the choice you made that eventually lead to the mistake being made, etc… Everything that occurs is based on choice; yes it IS as simple as your choice or someone else’s choice. So regardless of the situation, we must muster up enough strength to realize that we cannot do anything about someone else’s choice but we can make our own choice to learn here and MOVE on!! As tough as life’s lessons can be, each holds within them insight that will make us each that much more a better woman if we can take the time to look for the lesson and/or the pathway to new growth or even look for that open window due to the door that just shut on ya.  Here’s something that will help illustrate what I mean.

Most of us have heard the story or have seen the musical of Joseph and his Technicolor Dream Coat. For those of you who haven’t, let me give you a really quick version here…. Joseph was his father’s favorite out of his 10 brothers and they despised him for it; so much so that they conspired to kill him. The 2 brothers that were assigned to kill Joseph could not go through with it and dropped Joseph down into a well to die. The brothers then told their father that Joseph had been attacked by an animal and was dead. However, what his brothers did not know is that while he was in the well, Joseph was found by slave traders who took him into Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, one of the Pharaoh’s officers. To make a long story short (there is so much to this story, while Potiphar’s slave he is accused of rape by Potiphar’s wife, becomes jailed etc…) through it all, Joseph does not loose heart and eventually the Pharaoh rewards Joseph with overseeing the lands of Egypt. From slave to 2nd in command…now that’s what I call a blessing for choosing not to stay stuck, finding open windows when doors shut on ya, learning life’s lessons and staying positive through it all!!

Well many years later a famine comes and guess where Joseph’s 10 brothers have to come to get food, ya know that bible verse that says that God will make your enemies your foot stool, well Joseph’s brothers are now at his feet having to beg for food. Yes, they have to come to the Pharaoh’s right hand man…Joseph or they would die due to starvation. Now Joseph could have been bitter and evil and paid them back for all they had done to him but instead he says to them….

as for you, you meant evil against me but God meant it for good.”
-Genesis 50:20

Joseph realizes that all he went through was just so that he could be in this place at this time to SAVE his family. Yes, just like Esther and our theme for 2009, Joseph realizes that he too went through all that he went through “for such a time as this”. Joseph’s “for such a time as this” moment of preparation meeting opportunity saved his entire family! If Joseph had stayed stuck in his hurt and in what his brothers had done to him, he would have never been able to learn lessons from each place that got him to the greatest position in all of the land which in deed is where he needed to be! What a powerful story!!!

Rick Warren in a lesson about life’s hurts put it this way, “The way God is going to teach you the good qualities in life is to put you in the exact opposite situation. How will God teach you joy? By putting you in the middle of sorrow. How will God teach you love? By putting you around difficult people. How will God teach you peace? By putting you in the middle of chaos. God never wastes a hurt. He can bring good out of anything.” You see the more difficult the situation or adversity, the more valuable the lessons we can learn from it. I have heard it put this way, “life’s adversities are God’s universities” – so we can choose in hard times or adversity to stay stuck or to learn something. You can choose inner growth or inner turmoil. You can choose to look on the bright side or to have dark days. You can choose to learn something or to stay stuck.  What will you choose?

“Adversity will surface in every life. How we meet it makes the difference.” – Marvin J. Ashton

When bad things happen in life, don’t ask why. Ask how, and then discover what God wants to teach you.”
Rick Warren

Amen! Lemons in life should always be used for lemonade. As I grow older and wiser I’m learning that my life lessons are always taught through testimony. I read Rick Warren’s Purpose Driven Life email message as part of my daily devotion too! jc
