Can I Get a Rib?

14 08 2009

Many of you commented on the marriage aspect from last weeks discussion, so I thought as we continue with Target #3 “Focus on Faith”, working on building our own personal relationship with God, we will stay here for a moment and ponder, “Can I Get a Rib”

“And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman…”  Genesis :.21-22

As I was studying this bible verse, the notes underneath this verse in my Spirit Filled Life Bible, had this to say…. “As in other creative miracles of scripture, God begins with a seed, such as the jar of meal from which Elijah ate for 2 and a half years and the fish and the loves of bread which Jesus fed the 5,000.  The rib was likely chosen as representative of an intimate part of Adam’s make up.”  Hmm…an intimate part of Adam’s make up, this makes me think of 2 things. It makes me think of seed time and harvest and it also makes me think of becoming ONE with our mate as we do when we get married.  This idea of entering into this relationship means joining with another, it is to bring 2 pieces together as a whole body or family just as God did when He took Adam’s rib to make Eve.  So if we think of it this way,  that God created each of us in His likeness, or gave each of us a piece of His rib, then we can look at this concept of becoming one with where OUR rib came from as a seed that has already been planted in us.  A seed of faith, hope, love and promise; a seed of the gift that becomes our purpose if we water it by exploring and learning about the God in us!  That’s the RIB I am talking about!  So in doing so we ….

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2

All God is really calling us to do is to keep our mind focused on that RIB within.  You see if we can keep our mind focused on faith, hope, love and promise then we dwell in that special place that only God can dwell.  OK let me see if I can explain this further.

The word conformed according to Webster’s dictionary means to give the same shape, outline, or contour to; bring into harmony or accord; to be similar or identical; to be in agreement or harmony – isn’t this what we strive for in any perfect relationship?  So if we are having a relationship with God and are striving for what God strives for we will ….

“.. whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” – Philippians 4:8

On the other hand, when I think of what this bible verse may mean by not conforming to this world, I think of all the things that have been developed that are not of God…the negative things of this world.  Things like greed, if you don’t know what I mean think Bernie Maddof.  Things like lust, if you don’t know what I mean think Heidi Fleiss.  Things like jealousy, if you don’t know what I mean think Tanya Harding.   So just think about it, if you surround yourself with greed, lust, jealously – don’t these negative things begin to infiltrate your being?  However if we transform and keep our minds renewed to the place to where our RIB came from, we then aspire to become more like God which indeed is the opposite of the negative, the darkness of the world.  It is living a life in the light.   So this whole talk of the rib boils down to this…..the way we live our lives will display what we conform to, who we are, what we are made of.  It will show all that you are tapping into where your Rib has come from and that’s what this whole personal relationship with God is all about.  Let me put it this way, when you mold a lump of clay, once it dries you CANNOT change the shape it has been molded into, right?  This too is the same fashion our lives are being molded. You see as we conform or transform, i.e. become what is around us, (we will talk about your friends as we start Target #4 on August 28th ), if we choose to walk in the light and are transformed by renewing our mind then  you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12: 2b…in your own life.  It is this most sacred place of your heart which is housed within your ribs, yes your ribs act as a fortress around your heart to keep it safe as this too is the most intimate place that God can dwell.    Thus if you are working to live a life focused on God instead of the world, then you will be headed in a positive direction as you transform by this relationship you are having with the Almighty.  It’s kind of like those couples who have been married for a long time, you know how they begin to look a like and talk alike?  Clearly this is what happens when we each spend time with God and form our on unique relationship.  We begin to walk and talk different and this is what all of this rib talk is all about.  When you are being your most positive, true self and are living in the light of your gifts, you truly are functioning just as God would have you function and that is why He created us … to be lights in a dark world!

“When we came to Christ in a moment of time our hearts became filled with light and our hardened darkened hearts became softened, moldable and usable pieces of clay in the hands of the Master craftsman. He then molds us and makes us into a beautiful divinely changed peace of art. We then prove by the change in our lives to others what the good, acceptable and perfect will of God is. So on the day that God used one of Adams ribs to form Eve, it was a powerful statement of conformation and transformation, about becoming one with our maker.  The thing we must realize is that although God gifted us with our rib, a seed of faith, hope, love and promise, He also has also given us the gift of free will.  It is this gift that allows each of us to make our very own decisions, which we call choice.  So on this day, what will you choose?
