Let There Be Light

10 12 2009

As each of us focus on getting to our very own “For Such a Time as This” moment (Esther 4:14) there are 6 targets that will have us move in this direction.  (see our Theme for 2009 tab above for more information on all 6) Here we start our look at our last, Target 6 – “Let Your Light Shine”

When you think about light, what do you think of?  Sun on your face?  A flash light showing you the way?  A switch flipped on in a room so that you can see? But REALLY light was the beginning of everything!

“Then God said, ‘Let there be light’” – Genesis 1:3a

This is the first command God gives in the Bible as it says in the verse just before this one Genesis 1:2 “the earth was void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.” So everything began with light.  Even we began with light.  A light of purpose and promise that is planted inside of each of us at birth.  This seed of light that then goes through life’s circumstances and situations and if we navigate successfully through them we learn the lessons that only life teaches us so that our light may begin to shine.   It’s almost like our light is  what a silversmith is looking to see when he or she is processing silver.  As they hold that piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up because in order to refine the silver, you must hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames are hottest as to burn away all the impurities.  So could it be that life’s situations and circumstances happen to each of us to burn away impurities so that we can shine that much brighter?  So ladies, it is indeed this same light that illuminates in ALL of us when we are fully present to the self that God made us to be…. Despite the situations and circumstances that try to hinder us from being who are meant to be!!! YES this would mean that your overcome and you know who you are and therefore your switch is flipped on and you SHINE for the world to see.

“For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 4:6

So what is this light in us?  I believe it is being our most positive self and walking in the light of our gift that God has given to each of us.   This is what you do when you know who you are, what you are good at.  This is how you begin to grow and expand and as you do, you also grow in your relationship with God.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” – John 8:12

You see it is the creator that made each of us with our own special purpose and as we expand in Him, He can expand in us.  That indeed is the source of the light!  This is how we flip on the switch!!!  And over the course of this year, together in our discussions we have carved out a course toward living in your own light!!!

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another” – 1 John 1:7a

So as we come to a close of our theme for 2009 and move into 2010 over these next few weeks, here is what something to ponder…. What have you learned about yourself over the last year?  How have you grown and expanded?  Each year really is an opportunity for us to water the seeds of our existence and become a better ME…a better YOU!  How have you done this in 2009?  What path are you on?  What have you had to let go of to stay on your course?  Who are the members of your team that will help you play to win?

Along the course of this year, my prayer is that your light has begun to shine that much brighter because you have defined your way that much more distinctly.  The light of who you are and what you are good at.  The light of the roles you play as friend, daughter, sister, wife/girlfriend, mother, business owner, college student, etc…   if it hasn’t, what might you do in order to LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE?

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” – Matthew 5:14

“That you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world”- Philippians 2:15

“We are told to let our light shine and if it does, we won’t need to tell anybody it does.  Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call their attention to their shinning – they just shine.” – Dwight Moody

“I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true.  I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have.  I must stand with anybody that stands right and stand with him while he is right and part with him where he goes wrong.” – Abraham Lincoln

“Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light” – Helen Keller

So true, my friend! As part of my daily devotion, I always pray for others to see the light that is in me and know that it is Christ and then I thank God for guiding me to walk in the light and not in the darkness. It’s not always easy, cause sometimes my alter ego JenettaJonquita Jones-Jenkins wants to rear her head, and she usually only comes out in the dark, like a vampire. But I’m usually able to squash her with light!
