Expect Temptation

1 12 2010

We can’t work on having self control without expecting temptation.   Everyone is tempted. Even Jesus was tempted so it’s not whether you will or will not be tempted, YOU WILL!  Instead, it’s like being a fighter like Mohammed Ali, he knew punches would come and he  learned how to dance all around them. In that same vein it’s what we do in the moment of temptation that makes the difference.  It’s the decision to do the right thing or not that then follows with consequence.  Those consequences either keeps you on your path or takes you off of it.

Yes temptation is battle!  It’s a fight!  So instead of going in the ring ill prepared, get yourself ready for it.  Being temped is a battle that is spiritual, emotional and physical. So you must be fully alert and look out for it like a guard at a castle.   I say that because when you are trying to make a positive change, everything will come against you to stop you from trying to get there.  That is why the bible says

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind….” Romans 12:2a

You see when you renew your mind you are changing your viewpoint, your perspective on something.  Just think about a guard at a castle for a moment.  If they are truly on their job they are looking all around at every angle to have a bird’s eye view at all times.  Why?  So if a possible attacker approaches, they will be ready for the attack.  It is in this same vein that as you renew your mind, you begin to see things from a different place, in a different perspective so that old things are passed away and you become the new person you desire to be.  It is in this space between the new and the old that temptation comes.  Temptation happens in all kind of different ways. It can be being tempted to eat something we have no business eating due to things we are allergic to or that may break us out.  It can be our past trying to creep up and haunt us and make us remember who we used to be or how other folks used to treat us after we have let it all go. Anytime we are working to get something under control or to just be a better person, temptation comes.  It comes and makes that thing we are not supposed to be doing look just that much better. That’s why being on a diet is so hard.  I know for me, when I am trying to lose a pound our two that is when cakes and cookies seem to pop up out of nowhere to tempt me.  Or when I am trying to save a little extra money, that’s when I run in the mall to buy more lipstick that I need and that extra special blouse or shoes catches my eye and seems to be calling my name!!!  Ya’ll know what I am talking about!!!  Or when you finally get over that really bad relationship and actually start to date a really nice guy, that’s when old good for nothing Jimmy comes back begging you to take him back.   This is when we MUST find that power within to just say no?

It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe,  that lures him to evil ways.  ~Buddha

We have to first realize for ourselves the second part of the bible verse from above that says…

“..that you may prove to be what is good and acceptable and perfect in the will of God.” Romans 12:2b

So what is the perfect will of God for you?  Is it that you focus on your past or on your future?  Is it that you live unhealthy, depressed, disheartened frustrated, stressed, angry and annoyed?  Well I must tell you that God wants ALL of us to be happy and blessed!!!  So this is what we must focus on being and doing! If you can stay focused only on those things that indeed is what will come to you and it also helps you stay away from temptation. It’s kind of like that duck and weave move of a boxer, moving and spinning so that you won’t get hit.  So when temptation comes, if it contrary to you getting to your happy – spiritually, emotionally and/or physically -then we must make the choice to duck at the swing or at the jab headed our way as you just say no and walk away.  We must make the choice to put up the good fight and let nothing turn you around from your own promised land.  We do this by putting up our shield or our string of pearl that’s we have called the fruits of the spirit in our blog this year… in those moments when we don’t know what to do just exercise love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness or self control.  So as we end 2010 and go into 2011, which of these pearls do you need to increase so that you can fight against temptation?  And when you know you can expect it and be equipped to be victorious over it!!!  You become more than a conqueror!!

For every man (woman) there exists a bait which he (she) cannot resist swallowing.  ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Most people want to be delivered from temptation but would like it to keep in touch.  ~Robert Orben

Naturally slim, my mother seldom bought junk food when we were growing up, when questioned on this she replied, “If’ it’s not in the house, I can’t eat it.” So simple, yet so true. Years later, a friend was working with a personal trainer who insisted on conducting a home inspection before their first workout. The trainer proceeded to toss out all of the bad or processed foods lurking in the client’s cupboards. Temptation. If it’s there, you will eat it. You’re right, we can choose to not invite temptation into our space. It’s hard, but doable.

Amen, Amen! Temptation comes not every once in a while…but every darned day! The devil is busy! This week in the form of an old beau…wished him well, got off the phone and praised GOD that he kept me from traveling too far down that road!

Love ya girl!
