It Ain’t About How You Look or What You Have!

There is so much focus these days on how you look, what designer purse you have on your arm, the car you drive or the hair you buy.  However life is about so much more than the pursuit of material things.   In fact, a 2010 study conducted by a University of Colorado at Boulder psychology Professor Leaf Van Boven found that, “people who pursue happiness through material possessions are liked less by their peers than people who pursue happiness through life experiences.”  In other words, material things do not make you happy nor do they make you who you are.  So instead of placing emphasis on the pursuit of things, it’s time for us to define who we are.  It’s time for us to take the focus off of what we have but instead to grow into the person that we are meant to be.

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. – Proverbs 31:30

You see a fully defined woman knows what her gifts are and knows who gave them to her.  Instead of placing her confidence in how she looks, where she lives or what she drives, she places her confidence in how God has uniquely blessed her.  You see we each are born GREAT at something!!  So instead of me trying to be Beyonce, we already have one of those, I need to focus on being the best Nicole Roberts Jones that I can be!!  This is the same for you!  How we do this is by getting to know what we are good at and beginning to develop that area and allow ourselves to grow in it every day.  I believe when we do this we….

“Let your light so shine before men (and women) that they may see your good works and glorify our father in heaven.”  – Matthew 5:16

The light I am talking about is not caused by the bling of a diamond!  Instead when we are fully present in the person we are meant to be and we are working in the area where God has gifted us, then we definitely do shine. So when folks hear me talk about the desire to have every person live in their own light this is exactly what I mean.  But the work does not stop there.  Even a light bulb must be changed.  So that means we have to continue to grow and develop in our area of skill, talent, ability.  No Beyonce did not stop with Destiny’s Child, she started her solo career, her clothing line, her perfume… too, can each of us keep our light bright by growing and evolving.  We have got to start to develop our own genius so that our aptitude can take us to altitudes we would never have imagined.   After all God does not give us a gift and expect us to just stop there.  The more we work on developing it, the more blessings coming.  If ya don’t know what I mean ask Oprah, go back in time and ask Madame CJ Walker.  J  These folks did not start with great wealth.  They started with their raw talent!   The point is, it ain’t about How You Look or What You Have…  The mistake so many of us make is to see folks once they have arrived and start to believe that we should pursue the status we see and admire.  Instead it’s about your ability to become all you are meant to be as you shine from within.

“There is a very fine line between loving life and being greedy for it.” – Maya Angelou
