Get Your Party On!!

17 11 2011

As you take the time to get back on track and prepare to set new goals for 2012, one of the important things you must do is make sure you stop to recognize your accomplishments and as you do, celebrate!  Yes you MUST get your party and congratulate yourself.  So that as you move in the direction of your goal, I have found it helpful along your journey to honor, acknowledge and find pride in everything little bit you accomplish no matter how small the move is. Celebrating even small victories keeps you motivated and inspired to do more and to keep moving! Why do you think so many of us don’t stop to celebrate when we accomplish a difficult task? Why do we deny ourselves the privilege of acknowledgement and recognition for transitioning, changing and making moves? If ya ask me, any amount of evolution is a reason to celebrate!!!  Think about it, celebrations are how we all mark special occasions or milestones in our life.   On birthdays we accept well wishes from others so why not celebrate your life achievements as well!  After all, life is about living and as we each move in the direction of goals; we are definitely building the life of our dreams.  So don’t wait till you get there; celebrate all the way along the way.   Now by celebrating, I am not talking about being conceited or being braggadocios, but instead I am talking about sharing the great, exciting news with others in a positive way. I am talking about accepting praise and being thankful for how far you have come.  So take time and acknowledge what you have accomplished by:

  1. Writing it in a Journal:       Writing out each win, gives you reason to celebrate and reflect on a job      well done.  Each small victory adds      up to make the whole triumph of making it to the finish line of your goal.
  2. Look at How Far You Have Come: When you are feeling frustrated, go back and      read in your journal just how far you have comeThis helps you through the times of      struggle, frustration, disappointment, ya know setbacks! In those times, what      your journal is, is something that will remind you how far you HAVE come      and hopefully will give you fuel to keep on keeping on.
  3. Reward Yourself:        Buy yourself a present or a gift to pat yourself on the back for a  job well done! Don’t just keep it moving      to the next goal, stop and give yourself time to enjoy, relax and bask in      the glory of your accomplishment!  You      did it girl!  Now take a BIG inhaling      breathe and feel good about what you have done thus far!
  4. Acknowledge & Celebrate:      When you achieve even a small part of your goal, stop and find a way to allow      others to help you celebrate! Yes share it with friends and family.  Write it on your facebook page and allow      others to join in this moment of accomplishment.

So many people down play praise and appreciation. Yes it is OK for us to feel good about something we have done. This is a great way to start changing your mindset and allowing good to come to you. When you celebrate accomplishments, you will feel great, and that great feeling will produce more greatness in your life.  So, it’s time to get your party on and celebrate where you are each stop of the way on the way to where you are going!

Tomorrow Isn’t Promised

10 11 2011

On Wednesday morning as I was getting dressed, I heard the news that rapper, Heavy D was dead!  Dead!!!  I couldn’t believe it!  Hearing this news, gave me a moment of pause as I began to feel sad and heartbroken!  I was feeling discouraged because I just saw Heavy perform on the BET Awards not even a month ago and after seeing him, I was newly excited about the possibility of him having a comeback.  In that moment of disappointment on Wednesday morning, I also found myself thinking of Michael Jackson and his untimely death.  Thinking about both Heavy D and MJ reminded me that tomorrow isn’t promised.  Think about it, do you think Heavy D woke up on Tuesday morning and said, “hmmmm, I think I might die today.”  I hate to be so morbid but this has really made me wonder how many of us stop to think that this COULD be our last day, our last moment!  If that was the case, what would you do differently today knowing that you have reached the end of your stay?  For me, this feeling has made me feel even more urgent about getting my goals accomplished.  It has heightened my since of purpose and renewed my vision.   It reminds me to wake up every morning and LIVE for today.   As the famous saying goes,

 Yesterday is history and tomorrow is a mystery so live for today. – Unknown

So in the spirit of living for today, here are 4 keys to stay focused on the present;

  1. Let Go of the PastWhat does past mean, that it is over right? So learn the lessons from what lies behind you and leave it there….BEHIND YOU.
  2. Take Time to PlanStop and write out goals for yourself to achieve.  What good are all your desires if you just keep them in your head and you never sit down long enough to plan out how you will get there.  Get them out of your head and put them on paper.,…yes MAKE YOUR VISION PLAIN so you can see what you are working toward and how you will accomplish it.
  3. Keep in Mind Plans Can Change.  As you reach a milestone or two, your next mountain to climb may look different then you planned and that is OK, just alter your plan accordingly and keep it moving.  Don’t give up because things aren’t working exactly as you planned them.   We all must learn to roll with the punches.
  4. Face Each Day as a Gift.  Realize that you have 24 hours in any given day, don’t take those hours for granted and use them to the best of your ability in order to move in the direction of your plan, your dreams.

Here’s another question for you, when you leave this earth how do you want to be remembered? Whatever that answer is for you, it’s time to work toward your dream, your goals and make them happen.  It’s time to stop putting things off.

Live for today and live every moment working toward being ALL you were meant to be.  Live in celebration of the gift of life that was given to you TODAY!

Get Back Up!

3 11 2011

The last few weeks we have talked about how to stick to your goals but what happens if you are so far off your target that you don’t feel like you will ever truly get there?  I would liken this feeling to falling down however we can’t allow ourselves to fall down without getting back up, right?!

We all are familiar with falling down and getting back up.  Just think back to when you were little and you were learning to ride your bike.  Of course we fell down, but if you never got back up, you would have never learned how to ride a bike.  Let’s go back even further to when you learned how to walk, yes you had to crawl and then stumble before you walked so that means you feel down over and over and yet you got back up.  The point I am trying to make is that we all have fallen down in our lives, even beyond the time we learned to walk or ride that bike.  We have fallen when we went through a bad breakup, set a goal that did not happen the way we planned, or even lost a job or a loved one.  There are many situations and circumstances that take us through ups and downs in life.  So the question should not be whether or not we will fall but instead will you get back up!

Too often in life we allow ourselves to stay down there instead of finding the power within to push ourselves back up! Yes we must find that courage, strength, audacity or boldness to get back up again and again!!!!  Even when we don’t feel like it!  Even when we can’t see the opportunity or possibility that things will get better!  Even if we are frustrated, tired, heartbroken, distressed or depressed.  Why?  Because if we allow ourselves to stay stuck in negative and/or complain about it, things will never get better!  Murmuring and complaining makes us like the children of Israel.  You know that story in the bible where they were traveling to the promise land.  You see they were so focused on negative it took them 40 years to make a 40 day trip.  Why did it take so long?  Well when you are so stuck on negative it is difficult to see possibility when you feel impossibility.   Yes we have a choice when we find ourselves on that downward slope; we can either be bitter or better.  What do you want to be? Do you want to fall and stay there or do you want to get back up?  Do you want make a 40 day trip last  40 years?   I am sure you will agree that you want to be better, right!?  Here are two few things that can help you get back up;

  • Learn From Where You AreThere are lessons to be learned from everything. Consider where you are to be like a tune up.  You know we all have to take our car in for a tune up to keep it running properly, so consider this your time to make adjustments so that you can learn from this place and move on and better from the lessons learned.
  • Focus On The GoodDon’t dwell on what’s wrong, concentrate on what is going right!

By learning to see our challenges as opportunities, we take our power back and learn to dance in the face of difficulty! That is truly how we learn to get back up.  What’s your choice?

Get Your Mind Right!

27 10 2011

It amazes me how many of us set a new year’s resolution, a dream, a goal, an ambition but we never stop long enough to shift our mindset to get it in alignment with this new vision we have set for ourselves.  To get our thoughts in the position to prosper!  To get our beliefs, our viewpoint, our feelings in agreement with reaching that goal!  You see if we don’t believe it, we will never achieve it.  If we can’t trust it with certainty, we will never see it come to pass in our lives.   In order to realize any dream we have set for ourselves,  we must stop long enough to refocus our mind in that direction.    This need to change the way we think is even discussed by Paul in the bible…

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” -Romans 12:2

I believe that when we have this great desire inside of us or a new year’s resolution, or ambition that, that desire was planted in us by God.  Therefore if God planted it in us then we definitely have the opportunity to see it come to pass and all we really need to do to see it manifest in our lives is;

  1. Put a plan in place.
  2. Work the plan to make it happen.
  3. Get our mind in alignment to believe it is possible.

This is what I believe the apostle Paul is talking about when he calls for us to renew our mind.   We all have opportunities to doubt based on things that happened to us in our past that continue to haunt us, the negative self talk we have allowed ourselves to do for so long or even the haters that try to keep us in a position of less than our best.  Whatever it is we each have the power to overcome it, it all comes down to choice.   We all must make a conscious choice to dwell only on positive!!!!!!

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. – Philippians 4:8

On this day, what will you choose?  Will you choose to believe all that is good and possible about whom you are or stay stuck on who you aren’t?  I say GET YOUR MIND RIGHT, trust and believe the good that God has placed in you and start moving in the direction of the person you were meant to be!

Don’t Fall off the Wagon!

20 10 2011

Once we all get to this part of the year, we are well beyond our new year’s resolutions or the goals we set for 2011. Where are you with the goals you set for yourself for this year?  That new business you wanted to start, losing that extra weight or letting go of that dead weight (you know that bad relationship)? Some of us have found it easy to stay on track with our goals and some of us have had a hard time. As the saying goes, old habits die hard!  One of the keys I have found to staying on target with your goals is to pay attention to the emotions that are attached to your old habits. Knowing your triggers or what causes you to fall back into old behavior that changes your motivation to reach your goal into permission to lose focus, can help you turn the tide and stay on track.   Taping into how you feel in the moment that you lose your focus can be the key toward the successful realization of your goal, ambition or aspiration.   Here are a few things that can help;

  1. Write Down Why.  Write down why you set these new goals for yourself in the first place.  Why did you want to start a new business, why did you want to lose that extra weight or let go of that dead weight.  I suggest you write this as one word answers and put these words on a poster board so that you can hang it up in an area you go to often.  You can also add pictures that symbolize these words or goals.  I call this a motivation board and some call it a vision board, either way you look at, this will help you keep your eyes on your goals – keep your eyes on the prize!
  2. Keep a journal. Writing out your feelings can help you to get connected with how you are being thrown off of your goals. Take a moment and reflect on your mood or state of mind for the day especially when you are having one of your moments when you are having a hard time staying focused on your goals.  This will help you begin to understand what emotional triggers you to lose focus.  As you do you can begin to reflect on how to combat these emotional triggers so that you can stay the course and meet your goals.
  3. Be the little engine that could! Anything we want to accomplish in life we have got to stay in a positive frame of mind to get there. Even when we don’t feel like it we MUST speak life into every situation.  This starts with positive self-talk.  Sometimes you may have to say to yourself over and over again, I think I can, I think I can.  NO NO! Don’t let a hater infiltrate your positivity and plant a negative thought in your head, be prepared to shake it off and say I think I can, YES I CAN!  Fight to keep your happy assurance that you can do and will do this goal you have set for yourself.   For if you can believe it, you can achieve it!

No matter where you are with your goals, take a moment and renew your mind and get yourself in a position to move positively in the direction of all your dreams.  Which means you tap into your emotional triggers and no longer allow yourself to fall off the wagon that is moving you in the direction of your goals!

Keep On Moving Don’t Stop

13 10 2011

One of my absolute favorite songs from the 90’s is the song by Soul II Soul called Keep On Moving and the main verse of the song is – Keep On Moving Don’t Stop.  Thinking of this makes me realize one powerful thing; no one starts a race at the finish line. Just close your eyes and think of that for a second – no one starts a race at the finish line –  isn’t that powerful!!! Instead a race is run as you keep on moving and don’t stop!  I believe this is powerful because so many of us never reach our full potential because we never even step up to the starting line to start the race, let alone finish it.   I believe we are each born with natural gifts and abilities and until we begin to tap into them, we will never fully, we will never begin to move toward that finish line which is completely realizing our potential or our purpose.

The Webster dictionary defines potential as existing in possibility: capable of development into actuality.   So if potential is possibility then it is up to each of us to make it possible, tangible, real in our lives.  It definitely means we are capable of cultivating our potential to actually allowing ourselves to fully grow into the people we are each meant to be!    I underlined the word capable because if we are capable then it really is up to each of us to not just show up to the starting line but to actually run the race in order to be ALL that we are meant to be!   It is up to each of us to believe in our gifts and talents, even if no one else does, after all we MUST believe in ourselves first before anyone else will.  Let’s be real, often times it is so much easier to see the end then it is to see how the heck we will get there.  We get caught up in the notion of getting there.  Sometimes the journey seems so huge, massive that it is too big to accomplish. However instead of focusing on where we are, if we can focus on the finishing line… can help us stay excited, motivated and dedicated to continue to keep on moving.

Sometimes for me, it takes me knowing that the creator believes I can get there, that helps me to accomplish major goals.  I say that because I truly believe that if you have a HUGE desire that God is who put it there and if he believe you can do it, than who am I not to believe it!  So if God forms each of us with the end in mind, then HE knows we are capable of getting to that finishing line, after all why would He give us potential that we are not able to realize?  That is why I started today’s blog by saying that no one starts at a finishing line, instead we have got to make a choose to get our butts to the starting line and get in motion toward making things happen.  We HAVE to believe in our dreams, gifts, goals and aspirations enough to keep on moving and don’t stop.  NO MATTER WHAT! It is with confidence, determination and perseverance that we will be able to make it to realize our potential.  So let’s get moving in the direction of our goals, ambition and purpose.  It all starts with just one step.  If you are ever going to develop that potential, that seed that God has planted in you, you must make up in your mind that you are NOT going to quit and that WHAT IT TAKES you will see it manifest in your life.  That is exactly how you Keep on Moving Don’t Stop!

Do What You Believe Is Great Work

6 10 2011

We all heard the news that Steve Jobs, the popular co-founder of Apple, died Wednesday.  While I was in the airport headed out on yet another business trip, I sat having lunch in a airport restaurant.   As I sat eating, they showed Steve Jobs giving the commencement address at Stanford University in 2005 and the caption simply read, Do What You Believe Is Great Work.  I remember this speech and how it became an Internet video sensation. But this time seeing it after his recent death has me thinking about life & legacy.   It really reminds me of the question that I often ask myself “how do I want to be remembered?”  I am reminded that when you do exactly what you were meant to do, born to do, gifted to do, purposed to do, you definitely leave your mark.

I am sure back in the day when Steve Jobs was only dreaming of his life’s calling, folks talked about his ideas.  Especially because these ideas started in the late 70’s and  technology like he was dreaming of,  had yet to be seen.  However he pushed passed speculation and hateration to actually create new computer technology (I remember getting the very first apple computer while I was in college) he went on to create music MP3 players, ipods, iphones, ipads and I am sure there is more technology he created still yet to come.  Even more so, Steve Jobs paved the way for others to come behind him like Yahoo, Google, facebook, just to name a few.   Jobs along with Microsoft’s Bill Gates changed the way people use and interact with technology.

On the very same day Steve Jobs died,  I had the privilege of spending the evening with a group of female students at Northeastern University.  That evening I sat on a panel with two other professional women, sharing with these college women, pouring into them and encouraging then to make their mark on this world.   What I shared with the ladies becomes even more real today “God does not use a cookie cutter when He makes each of us.  He makes each of us different, special unique and our goal in life is to find and use our gift.”  How Steve Jobs left his mark on this world is definitely NOT my path, shoot I can barely use a computer, but he does remind me that we each have the power to DEFINE our legacy.  We each are good at something and it is up to each of us to discover our gift and give that gift to the world as our work.   What were you born to do?  Be a teacher, lawyer, doctor, performer, event planner, social worker, designer, mother….  I believe when we are working in our gift we not only bless the world but we also bless ourselves as we find and do something that we absolutely love to do.  We must each…. Do What You Believe Is Our Own Great Work!  So here’s a thought to pounder….what gift do you have to give to the world?  When you leave this world, how will you be remembered?

 “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.” – Steve Jobs

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.” ~ Steve Jobs
